Prof. Voss and Pilato are currently looking for one research assistant with immediate availability to perform research tasks related to international business and sustainability.
Tasks might include a literature review and conduction and/or analysis of interviews.
Good English writing skills are required.
Knowledge of academic databases is a plus.
The position (only 1) is immediately available.
Hours: between 40 and 50 (we need to confirm the exact amount yet).
The position will go until the end of fall 2022 is open to MSc current students or alumni with immediate availability, and is remunerated at 21.84 $ per hour.

Theme: AI Industry in Montreal
Summary: The project will look into the resilience and innovativeness of tech ecosystem of Montreal, with a particular focus on Montreal’s dynamic artificial intelligence (AI) cluster. The aim of the project is to conduct a multilevel and multifaceted analysis of different types of innovations (product, process, organizational, marketing, etc.) and business models that are produced by the local AI firms and evaluate how these different innovation types are affected by multiple factors ranging from the intrinsic firm-level strategies to the structure of inter-firm collaborations revealed in local, regional and global interfirm networking. The project will employ mixed methods including qualitative and quantitative analyses.

Exploring the micro-geography of innovation in Montreal
Summary: Innovation is driven by technological, strategic and commercial knowledge. Knowledge may be acquired or generated through local learning or through non-local interaction. Recent studies have emphasised the micro-geography of such interactions and related innovation outcomes in an urban context.
The aim of the project is to study the role of micro-geographical proximity within the service sector in Montreal and to analyse how micro-location inside a cluster enables firms to participate in and benefit from localized and highly specialized knowledge exchanges. The project will employ mixed methods including qualitative (about 30 interviews to be conducted) and quantitative analyses.

La Grappe Métropolitaine de la Mode (Grappe mmode) est à la recherche d'un.e étudiant.e pour mener un rapport qui montrerait aux gouvernements et aux acteurs industriels la pertinence du marché américain dans un contexte de relance pour l'industrie de la mode, du vêtement et du textile.
Contexte : Au fil des années, les industriels du Québec ont établi de bonnes relations avec les détaillants américains pour les ventes en gros et la réputation des entreprises montréalaises et québécoises n'est plus à faire. Avant la pandémie, le marché américain représentait environ 79% des exportation de l’industrie québécoise de la mode. De 2016 à 2018, en raison des négociations ALENA-CUSMA et la menace de certains accès aux marchés américains, les gouvernements, surtout au palier fédéral, ont développé des programmes d'aide à l'exportation basées sur des fondements de diversification des marchés. Malgré cette stratégie, le marché américain reste central pour les industriels québécois de la mode. Depuis l’implémentation du CUSMA en juillet 2020, les entreprises québécoises y bénéficient d'un accès sans précédent, en particulier via le commerce électronique. Toutefois, la pandémie de la COVID a été très éprouvante pour les entreprises québécoises et montréalaises et le développement de marché est très difficile depuis. L’industrie de la mode est basée sur le "touch and feel" ; par conséquent, une ouverture des frontières est primordiale pour prospecter chez nos voisins du Sud et y consolider les ventes.
Méthodologie et rémunération : Ce projet pourra débuter en janvier 2022 (idéalement à commencer dès novembre 2021) et devra être remis avant la fin avril 2022. Des contacts seront facilités avec les acteurs industriels pour la collecte de données et l’étudiant.e sera invité.e à passer du temps dans l’organisation. Possibilité de rémunération à discuter avec l’organisation.

The Metropolitan Fashion Cluster (Mmode) is looking for a student to conduct a report that would show governments and industrial players the relevance of the US market in a context of recovery for the fashion, clothing and textile industry.
Background: Over the years, Quebec manufacturers have established good relations with U.S. wholesalers and the reputation of Montreal and Quebec companies is now well established. Before the pandemic, the U.S. market accounted for about 79% of the Quebec fashion industry's exports. From 2016 to 2018, due to the NAFTA-CUSMA negotiations and the potential threat of limitations to market access, governments (especially at the federal level) have developed export assistance programs targeting market diversification. Despite this strategy, the American market remains central to the Quebec fashion industry. Since the implementation of the CUSMA in July 2020, Quebec businesses have benefited from unprecedented access, particularly via e-commerce. However, the COVID pandemic has made market development very difficult ever since. The fashion industry is based on "touch and feel"; therefore, an opening of borders is essential to allow for prospection in the U.S. and sales consolidation.
Methodology and remuneration: this project can start in January 2022 (would ideally start as soon as November 2021) and shall be submitted by the end of April 2022. Contacts will be facilitated with industrial actors for data collection and the student will be invited to spend time in the cluster. Possibility of remuneration to be discussed with the organization.

Résumé : Pour supporter son plan stratégique et renforcer sa position de leader dans le marché mondial de la canneberge biologique, Fruit d’Or aimerait mieux comprendre le marché mondial (et par région) de la canneberge biologique : les vecteurs de croissance, les opportunités et les menaces. Plus spécifiquement (1) identifier la taille du marché par région et perspective de croissance; (2) réaliser SWOT Fruit d’Or et les joueurs principaux; (3) examiner le potentiel de marché biologique par cible géographique (Asie, Europe, NORAM) et générationnelle (gen-x vs milléniaux vs boomers); (4) analyser les motivations et barrières de consommation des canneberges biologiques et les principaux facteurs d’influence ( prix, distributions, facilité d'accès,...).
Partenaire: Fruit d’Or. Fondée en 2000 et basée à Villeroy au Québec, Fruit d’Or est le chef de file dans la transformation des petits fruits et plus spécifiquement numéro un au monde pour la transformation de canneberges biologiques. Fruit D’Or est aussi le deuxième plus grand transformateur de bleuets sauvages biologiques. La très grande majorité de ses petits fruits proviennent de producteurs solidement établis au Québec. Cette structure d'approvisionnement lui permet d'assurer une distribution rapide et fiable dans plus de 50 pays. Fruit d’or : plus de 400 employés et 5 sites au Québec.

Description of the organization:
International organization dedicated to the environmental cause. Its role is to promote collaboration between Member States concerning environmental matters. The division offering the mandates focuses on the engagement with the private sector on issues identified as priorities by the Member States.
Description of the projects:
There are two (2) research projects. The first project consists of an analysis of the diverse private sector engagement initiatives. The project will consist in analysing 6 to 8 cases to provide recommendations as to how to improve these initiatives in the future. The organization will provide access to the cases. This first project will imply conducting interviews with various participants from the private sector.
The second project consists of an analysis of opportunities (gap analysis) for the organization in terms of private sector engagement at the North American level. The aim would be to inform stakeholders about their strategy in order to limit the duplication of initiatives and provide added value. This second project involves interviews with various stakeholders, including organizations offering similar programs.
Timeline:
The organization works with a tight schedule. They want to present the research findings at their annual conference July 14-15, 2022. To give them enough time to edit, translate and circulate the materials, they would need the reports ( executive report) from the students no later than mid-June. According to what was discussed with the organization, the project would start part-time in February/March and increase to full-time at the end of April to be able to meet the project requirements for mid-June.
Remuneration:
Scholarship whose value would be around $4,000 for each student. The amount remains to be confirmed with the organization.

L’organisation travailler avec un échéancier serré. Elle souhaite une annonce, basée sur les résultats de la recherche, lors de notre conférence annuelle qui aura lieu les 14-15 juillet 2022. Afin de leur laisser du temps pour éditer, traduire et faire circuler les documents, ils auraient besoin des rapports (rapport exécutif) de la part des étudiants au plus tard à la mi-juin. Selon ce qui a été discuté avec l’organisation, le projet commencerait à temps partiel en février/mars et augmenterait à temps plein à la fin avril afin d’être en mesure de répondre aux exigences du projet pour la mi-juin.

Theme: Implementing a supply chain in China in the bike industry
Summary: The project consist in writing a pedagogical case about the dark side of success and the implementation of a reliable supply chain in China to meet demand requirements. The case is based on a true story: a cargo bike company that launched one of the most successful campaigns in Kickstarter’s history. The product, the Taga 2.0, was innovative and was design for affordability. However, the company faced several challenges that ultimately led to its insolvency. Primary material for writing the case is publicly available documents. The project is suitable for someone with an interest for strategy, supply chains, and/or kickstarter campaigns.

I have a potential opportunity for a student who is interesting in writing a case on competitive corporate strategy for a global trading firm, Targray (www.targray.com)
The project would include the development of a teaching case and supporting teaching note, using both secondary data and material provided by the firm (interviews and documents).
Although the project is not renumerated, the student would be provided an opportunity to learn more about the firm, global strategy in practice, and commodities trading (on a global scale). The process of developing the case is also an opportunity to apply research skills in practice.
The project start date would be the fall semester. The student can work remotely on the project and on their own time, so a lot of flexibility. The idea would be to complete the case in the Fall 2021 semester or (latest) Spring 2022.

Summary: All the theoretical and empirical evidence indicated that the pre-COVID 19 world has been increasingly globalizing with ever-increasing geographic scope and complexity of supply chains, all types of international collaborations and innovations. Summary: The last decade has witnessed a surge of research interest in temporary clusters research. This has resulted in important insights concerning the role of temporary clusters in supporting economic processes of interactive learning and knowledge sharing and the way they are organized spatially and temporally. The objective of this project is to provide the first comprehensive systematic review of the temporary cluster literature, including a critical assessment of these research efforts, and offer suggestions for the future of temporary clusters in the context of the current COVID-19 crisis.

Summary: The study analyses academia’s assessment of the Shell-Nigeria conflicts and informs the intersecting areas of international business with for e.g. corporate social responsibility; socio-economic development; sustainable development; politics; governance. It is based on a literature review of all relevant peer-reviewed papers in this area.
Project: This project involves reviewing about 60 journal articles in detail in Atlas.ti and coding them. The selected candidate(s) (one or two) will be provided with the Atlas.ti software and they will be trained on how to use the software to code the articles. The candidate(s) have the option of basing their supervised projects on this research activity or their MSc theses on the Shell-Nigeria conflicts.

Description des tâches : Pour supporter les différentes activités de service offert par GoExport auprès des entreprises qui désirent s’internationalisation, GoExport offre la possibilité de réaliser des recherches approfondies sur les marchés internationaux et des analyses sur ses secteurs et industries prioritaires. L’objectif est de réaliser des études de marché à partir des bases spécialisées telles que Ibis World et Dun & Bradstreet Hoovers et de faire des analyses dans le but de fournir des recommandations pertinentes pour les clients de GoExport. Un autre objectif du mandat est de réaliser des analyses permettant de mieux renseigner les clients dans leur processus d’internationalisation dans différents marchés internationaux.
