One week before the test, the Business Language Training Centre (CFLA - Centre de formation en langues des affaires) will send the exit test procedure to students registered for the test.
Everyone enrolled in the BBA or BMgt programs must pass the HECFRAN test to graduate. Read the Exemption section below for information about an equivalency.
The HECFRAN test requires students to produce a hand-written briefing note that provides an accurate, well-balanced representation of the ideas and arguments developed in a press kit. Passing the test is proof of your proficiency in French and your ability to write at a professional level, a skill that serve you well with your current or future employer.
The test lasts 3 hours and takes place in HEC Montréal classrooms. Find the exact room in HEC en ligne.
You should allot about 1 hour should to reading the press kit and taking notes, 1 hour and 15 min. to writing the briefing note and 45 min. to revising the text.

The CFLA has developed self-study material for university and professional writing to help you write with confidence and professionalism. The interactive modules and demonstrations in this self-study may be helpful in preparing for your test.
You are also entitled to four one-on-one meetings with a CFLA tutor. During these meetings, you will receive tailored support for structuring a text, paraphrasing an authors’ ideas or polishing your grammar. Sign up for one-on-one tutoring.
Three reference works are allowed during the test: a printed dictionary, grammar book, and conjugation guide.
Your results will be posted on HEC en ligne > Test results five to eight weeks after the test date.
The passing grade for the HECFRAN test is 60%. If you pass, an “ES” (for Exigences satisfaites, or requirements met) will appear on your transcript. If you fail the test, you will be required to take the three-credit course Techniques de rédaction universitaire et professionnelle (academic and professional writing techniques) and receive a passing grade in order to graduate.
