Business English Exit Test
HECTOPE
IMPORTANT!
The HECTOPE test will take place in person (the written component) and online (the oral component) as of fall 2024 term.
One week before the test, the CFLA will send the exit test procedure to students registered for the test.
Everyone enrolled in the BBA or BMgt programs must pass the HECTOPE test to graduate. Read the Exemption section below for information about an equivalency.
HECTOPE is a language test that assesses English language communication skills in academic and professional settings. It measures reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing and speaking skills.
The written component lasts 2 hours and takes place in HEC Montréal classrooms. It evaluates:
- Written comprehension and vocabulary (30 questions)
- Grammar (30 questions)
- Writing an email
The oral component lasts 30 minutes and takes place in the Test & Quiz section of ZoneCours immediately after the written component. It evaluates :
- Oral comprehension (20 questions)
- Oral expression (video recording)
Students must complete both components to pass the HECTOPE test.
SCHEDULE AND REGISTRATION
To find the test schedule:
- Go to HEC en ligne. Click on “Manage Classes”.
- Click on “Class Search and Enroll”.
- Choose the desired term.
- Enter “HECTOPE” in the search box.
- Click on the test session you found.
- The “Enrollment Information” tab shows you the test registration deadlines.
To register:
- Click on the arrow to the right of the test you found.
- This indicates the test is open.
- If the arrow is missing, you can’t add the test to your shopping cart or register for it.
- Follow the steps displayed on the screen.
- Note that if your enrollment period isn’t open, but your shopping cart is available, the test will be directly added to your cart. You will still need to complete the registration procedure for the test.
- Make sure the confirmation message is displayed on the screen.
Important note: You must go to HEC en ligne at least 7 days before the test date to register or cancel your registration for a test.
PREPARATION
Use these tools to help prepare for the test.
RESULTS
Your results will be published at HEC en ligne > Test results, three to five weeks after the test date. The passing grade for the HECTOPE test is:
- a C (intermediate-advanced level) to graduate from the BBA with the French stream and the BMgt.
- a B- (intermediate-advanced level) to graduate from the BBA with the bilingual stream.
- a B- (intermediate-advanced level) to graduate from the BBA with the trilingual stream (for those admitted before fall 2025).
If you fail the test, you must take the course equivalent for the required level and receive a passing grade.

EXEMPTION
To be exempted from the HECTOPE test and meet the language requirements for your program, you must have taken and passed one of the following courses:
- BBA – French stream and BMgt: Business English – Intermediate.
- BBA – Bilingual stream: Business English – Intermediate-Advanced.
- BBA – Trilingual stream (for those admitted before fall 2025): Business English – Intermediate-Advanced.
