Cortex, a game developed at HEC Montréal, is a marketing hit
October 24, 2022
Professors Jean-François Plante and Pierre-Majorique Léger have received the Innovator of the Year Award from American software company SAS Institute. Their Cortex game, created in collaboration with the ERPsim Lab team, lets players develop their analytical skills.
Cortex is a simulation game used as a learning tool in data science, and is used in some HEC Montréal courses. Many companies also rely on it to train their teams.
HEC Montréal is an SAS partner, through its ERPsim Lab. The company distributes Cortex worldwide.
SAS held an award ceremony for its business partners for the first time this year, to recognize the products it markets and which are a real success with its customers.

The 3 cortex scenarios
Cortex offers 3 scenarios for participants, allowing them to apply different data analytics concepts in realistic settings.

Working from a dataset of over a million potential donors, participants must identify potential donors to a foundation.
The goal is to maximize donations.
Credit risk scenario
Participants are provided with a dataset of a million car loan applications, and must use their skills to decide which loan to approve.
The goal is to maximize net profits after 2 years.
Retention scenario
Using a history of transactional data from nearly one million subscribers of a telecommunications company, participants must use their skills to predict clients at risk of leaving the company in the next 12 months and who could be persuaded to remain.
The goal is to maximize net profits after 2 years.
