Van Berkom JMSB Small-Cap Case Competition

The HEC Montréal delegation bagged 3rd place in the 11th annual Van Berkom John Molson School of Business (JMSB) Small-Cap Case Competition which took place on March 25 and 26, 2022, at Concordia University.
During this case competition focused on small-cap investment, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA – Finance specialization) students, Maxime Amyot, Elizabeth Laroche, Frédéric Lasnier and Mark Andrew Robin, competed with 7 other Canadian teams and 1 American team.
They first took part in a preliminary round, with alumnus Julien Galisson (HEC Montréal 2019 and 2021) acting as their coach. They were allocated one week in which to prepare a research report on an American small-cap investment firm.
For the final round, which took place over 2 days, they had to solve 2 cases, present them to a jury consisting of specialists and industry experts and answer their questions:
- Day 1 – recommendation to sell Installed Building Products Inc., an American insulation company
- Day 2 – recommendation to buy Pet Valu, a Canadian retailer of pet supplies

The HEC Montréal team stood out for its ability to analyze the financial business case, and for its strategic recommendations, based on the skills acquired in class.
