Accelerating energy transition for women and youth in Senegal

December 12, 2023

Clean technologies are now increasingly affordable and widely available. Despite this, the transition to clean energy is slow to materialize in Senegal, due to the many barriers that stand in its way. The Renouveau FJ project will accelerate it by increasing the participation of women and youth in renewable energy value chains.

Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and carried out in collaboration with several organizations in Senegal and Canada, including the HEC Montréal IDEOS hub and Desjardins International Development (DID), this project, valued at $850,000, aims to provide all stakeholders with a deeper understanding of this issue and to experiment with solutions likely to stimulate such a participation.

The selection of the Renouveau FJ project was officially announced by IDRC during COP28, which ends in Dubai today. Only 12 projects worldwide have been selected by the Canadian organization as part of the initiative entitled “Clean Energy for Development: A Call to Action”.

A multidisciplinary team

Renouveau FJ, a 3-year action research project relying on a multidisciplinary team, is inspired by recent collaborations between DID and the IDEOS hub in several countries. It will include university researchers specializing in the areas of entrepreneurship and renewable energies, inclusive finance institutions from Senegal, and other local organizations.

Significant steps will be taken to ensure ownership of the results by local government and financial authorities, for the purpose of promoting the up-scaling of the project and maximizing its impact.
