2024 Cultural Management Awards for David Lavoie and Rosalie Beauchamp

David Lavoie (HEC Montréal, 1999), executive director of Festival TransAmériques, and Rosalie Beauchamp, co-founder, and general director of Le Monastère, won the Career Award and the Young Cultural Manager Award respectively, as part of the 2024 Cultural Management Awards presented by the Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management at HEC Montreal.
These distinctions highlight the role of cultural managers and promote their achievements in society.

The jury consisted of 6 other personalities from the arts and cultural management community.
DAVID LAVOIE AT a glance
After studying business administration at HEC Montréal, David Lavoie began his career as a manager in the graphic design sector and at the café-theatre L’Aparté.
- He then took over as administrative director of the Théâtre de la Pire Espèce and co-founded the Festival du Jamais Lu in 2000.
- He helped create the Théâtre Aux Écuries in 2005 and served as its general manager.
- In 2013, he received the Sentinelle Prize from the Conseil québécois du théâtre.
- He was appointed deputy executive director of Festival TransAmériques that same year, its co-executive director in 2014, and executive director in 2021. In 10 years, he increased the event budget from $3.3 million to $5.3 million.
- He is also involved in the Conseil québécois du théâtre, the Canadian Arts Summit, Écoscéno, the Caisse de la Culture Desjardins and the Partenariat du Quartier des spectacles.

- “David Lavoie is a visionary cultural builder,” said Charles Millard, president and CEO of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec (FCCQ). “At this stage of professional maturity, his numerous legacies to the cultural community bear witness to an extraordinary journey that deserves to be celebrated.”
- The jury highlighted “his exceptional career punctuated by the introduction of new business models and eco-friendly energy transition that continue to leave their mark on the cultural landscape”.
Rosalie beauchamp at a glance
After receiving a double college diploma in natural sciences and dance at Cégep Saint-Laurent, followed by a preparatory course at Verdun Circus School and several years of self-learning, Rosalie Beauchamp began her career as a circus artist, performing across North America and Europe.
- In 2016, she became a co-founder and co-general director of Le Monastère, a circus cabaret show held inside the Anglican church of St. Jax. During this period, she also quenched her thirst for learning and self-improvement through a lot of leadership and management support.
- Seven years down the line, she is now the general director of Le Monastère, which is currently the second circus company in Montréal with a budget of $1.5 million.

- While endorsing her candidacy, Nadia Drouin, executive director of En Piste, highlighted “her audacity and ability to innovate by reinventing Le Monastère into a dynamic cultural space, open to the circus arts”.
- “She is a true cultural entrepreneur who has not only saved a heritage site, but also created jobs and income, and made creative circus popular,” said the jury.
About the Cultural Management Awards
The Career Award was created in 2011 and it recognizes the outstanding contribution a manager with at least 20 years of experience. The Young Cultural Manager Award, which was created in 2021, recognizes the first major achievement by an individual with more than 5 years of work experience. These awards are presented at the Soirée Horizons, which is organized jointly by the Carmelle and Rémi Marcoux Chair in Arts Management, Brigade Arts Affaires de Montréal (BAAM) and Culture Montréal.
