Four prestigious medals for the student community
June 3, 2024
Philippe Tremblay, a recent graduate of the School, has received the Governor General’s Academic Medal, which recognizes academic excellence and is the most prestigious recognition awarded to students of Canadian educational institutions.
Three other members of the student community, Cassandre Boisselle-Pitre, Carl Chabot and Angie Dermo-Bowes, have received the Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Medal, a commendation that recognizes sustained volunteer involvement or an inspiring attitude with a positive influence on society.
About the winners
Philippe Tremblay maintained an impressive cumulative GPA of 4.19 as a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student specializing in Finance, and that too, in the Honor track. He has received several admission, excellence and involvement scholarships, especially for his commitment to the HEC Montréal Student Investment Fund.
He has also made a lasting impression – both nationally and internationally – through his participation in over fifteen university competitions and has played a key role in mentoring the next generation of HEC Montréal leaders as a research assistant for the University Competitions Service. This mentor to three 1st year students also completed two summer internships in wealth management and managerial consultation, during which he was singled out for his substantial impact within the community and his ambitious career aspirations.
Cassandre Boisselle-Pitre has always sought to exert a positive influence on those around her and be involved in activities that reflect her values, so it was a natural progression for her to start her BBA (Applied Economics and International Business mixed option). She helped set up and was appointed head of the HEC360 squad, whose mandate was to intervene at on- and off-campus social events to prevent instances of sexual violence (VACS) as well as cases of alcohol and drug abuse.
The team that she leads is made up of 30 volunteers this year and has participated in more than 40 major volunteer events. She also makes it a point to liaise with the HEC Montréal Standing Committee on preventing sexual violence, thereby extending the impact of HEC360’s actions among the staff.
Carl Chabot, an MSc – Finance student and a BBA graduate (bilingual stream, with Honors mention), excels not only in his academic pursuits, but also as a teacher, athlete and volunteer. As captain of the Carabins football team, with which he won the Dunsmore and Vanier Cups in 2023, he knows how to greatly motivate his group of 100 players with his mental strength, optimism and determination.
He has been involved passionately and professionally as a Teaching Assistant in the School for three years now, without ever skimping on his commitments to the community. He is a real source of inspiration for the next generation as a prominent member of the Montréal Carabins Student-Athlete Committee – for which he liaises with Le Phare, Enfants et Familles, a pediatric palliative care home – in addition to helping young people with academic difficulties.
Angie Dermo-Bowes, a BBA student specializing in Business Intelligence is committed to several causes: prevention of sexual violence, social justice and sustainable development (SD). In high school, she volunteered in an organization that helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and, since then, has been dedicated to enriching her community and having a positive influence on those around her.
Since arriving at HEC Montréal, she has served as AEHEC Vice-President, Sustainable Development, orchestrating numerous projects including a fundraiser for the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, blood drives, and a campaign to collect Christmas gifts for children under the Director of Youth Protection. She also got involved in HEC360, the sexual violence prevention squad, to help create a more caring and inclusive university environment.
