Joint 1st prize in international taxation for a team of HEC Montréal students

September 3, 2024

Four students from the MA in Law (LLM) – Tax option program, Thomas-Erfan Bélanger-Goadri, Félix Bergeron, Youness Ellithi and Anthony Tahan tied for first place with an American team in the International Tax Case Competition organized by the Tax Executives Institute.

To solve the case on transfer pricing implications for intangible assets, our students were mentored by Caroline Escande, Tax Manager at Nestlé Health Science and Igor Soroka, Director, Corporate Taxation at Saputo. The highly demanding jury, consisting of members from the International Fiscal Association, was impressed by their concrete solution, solid analysis of the practical and economic consequences as well as the direct impacts on the companies involved.

« We spent a lot of time and effort on preparations by reviewing our knowledge of transfer pricing, gaining a deeper understanding of intangible assets with the help of short videos, and practicing working as a team to solve similar cases. So, this victory is a very nice reward for us and crowns a weekend filled with wonderful encounters. » - Anthony Tahan
