A Tech3Lab research team stands out on the international stage

A team of researchers from HEC Montréal’s Tech3Lab won the Best Paper Award during the human-computer interaction workshop at the most prestigious conference organized by the Association for Information Systems, which is the leading association in the field of information systems.
The award-winning paper is entitled Impact of Smartphone Multitasking on Walking Behavior: Is Cognitive Absorption the Key?, and is based on research as part of a project conducted by Atul Sharma, PhD student in Information Technology (IT).

Smartphones and walking behavior
This study enhances comprehension of cognitive absorption during smartphone multitasking, shedding light on its influence on walking behavior. To reach this conclusion, the team explored the mediating role of deep task engagement or cognitive absorption by using a smart garment to capture real time physiological data along with self-report measures.
