Laurent Charlin appointed Mila’s interim scientific director
March 28, 2025
Associate Professor Laurent Charlin has been appointed Interim Scientific Director of Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.
This means that he will work closely with Mila’s Associate Scientific Co-Directors, members of the Scientific Council (which he has already been part of since 2017) and faculty members, as well as its Executive Team and Board of Directors, to continue organizing the Institute's research activities until a permanent Scientific Director is appointed.
He will therefore take over the duties of the highly regarded Yoshua Bengio, who will now become Scientific Advisor to the institute he founded. These new responsibilities will allow Professor Bengio to devote more time to his research on AI safety and his international AI governance initiatives.

“I am honoured to succeed Yoshua Bengio, one of the most eminent scientists of our time. This appointment – which I welcome with great humility and joy – is all the more significant, as I’ve been with Mila since its creation, and this will allow me to continue my work in a rallying manner.”
