Two of the most cited articles in prestigious journals

April 10, 2025

HEC Montréal faculty members Jean-François Harvey, Xavier Parent-Rocheleau and Marie-Claude Gaudet, along with PhD student Antoine Bujold, have earned accolades for their papers which were among the top 10 most cited in 2 prestigious journals: the Journal of Organizational Behavior (JOB) and Human Resource Management (HRM).

Navigating strategic change despite ambiguity

Jean-François Harvey’s research entitled “Experimentation in the face of ambiguity: How mindful leaders develop emotional capabilities for change in teams,” which was conducted in collaboration with Professor Ravi Kudesia (Fox School of Business and Management) and published in JOB, explores what facilitated learning through experimentation for managers and their teams during strategic change, which is often a source of ambiguity for those in charge for implementing it.

Results reveal that the ability of managers to focus on the present moment helps them navigate ambiguity more effectively and maintain their willingness to experiment with novel actions, which in turn motivates their team to do the same.

“By integrating social cognitive theory, mindfulness research and team dynamics, our paper proposes an original model that links the attention capacities of leaders, experimentation behaviours and collective emotional reactions,” states Jean-François Harvey. “Based on a rigorous field study conducted among 88 teams, it combines practical relevance and methodological soundness, making it a valuable resource for both researchers and practitioners.”

An innovative tool for algorithmic management

The paper entitled “Creation of the algorithmic management questionnaire: A six-phase scale development process,” which was published in HRM, was written by Xavier Parent-Rocheleau in collaboration with Professors Sharon K. Parker (Curtin University), Marie-Claude Gaudet and PhD student Antoine Bujold.

The study presents the process of developing and validating a questionnaire to measure the perceived exposure of 1,332 workers to algorithmic management, i.e., the use of algorithms to perform tasks related to the supervision and coordination of employees. Relying on 3 samples and adhering to the most rigorous standards for the development and analysis of psychometric tools, it provides researchers with a new and unprecedented instrument.

“There was no validated questionnaire that could be applied in multiple contexts to measure the presence and degree of algorithmic management, which is a recent phenomenon,” emphasizes Xavier Parent-Rocheleau. “The availability of such a tool is therefore very useful for researchers in order to continue the dissemination of knowledge on the subject.”
