What happens at the end of your lease
What happens at the end of your lease
How lease renewals work in Quebec
+
Leases renew automatically on their expiry date
By law, a residential lease renews automatically for the same term and under the same conditions, unless the landlord provides a written notice to the contrary.
+
If you do not wish to renew your lease
If you wish to leave your apartment at the end of your lease, you need to inform the landlord in writing three to six months prior to this date, failing which the lease will be automatically renewed for the same duration and with the same terms as the original lease.
+
Notice of changes to the lease
If the landlord wishes to change the terms of the lease (e.g., increase the monthly rent), they must inform you in writing by a specific deadline, as required by law.

- Housing committees (comités de logement) and tenant associations (associations de locataires): Both types of organizations provide free, confidential services to tenants looking for help in standing up for their rights.
