Research
The granting agencies of the Canadian and Quebec governments award university students numerous research scholarships, but the majority of the scholarships are aimed at graduate students. Consult the Scholarship Directory to obtain detailed information regarding these financing options.

Government funding agencies
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) The annual scholarships offered by this organization are intended for students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents doing research in the social sciences and humanities. At the master's level, students must be registered in the thesis stream to receive the payments.
Only the CGS – Vanier Scholarship Program (PhD) is also open to international students.
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) The annual scholarships offered by this organization are intended for students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents doing research in the natural sciences and engineering (including mathematics). At the master's level, students must be registered in the thesis stream to receive the payments.
Only the CGS – Vanier Scholarship Program (PhD) is also open to international students.
- Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) The annual scholarships of this organization are intended for students whose research project is in the field of social sciences. Since fall 2017, students from other Canadian provinces or with a study permit are also eligible if they have been residing in Quebec for at least 6 months on the closing date of the competition. Some programs are also available for international students who are either newly arrived or plan to come to Quebec to complete their studies.
- Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) The annual scholarships of this organization are intended for students whose research project is in the field of natural sciences and technology. Since fall 2017, students from other Canadian provinces or with a study permit are also eligible if they have been residing in Quebec for at least 6 months on the closing date of the competition. Some programs are also available for newly arrived international students who plan to study in Quebec.
- MITACS Scholarship programs designed to help students complete research internships. Masters students in both the supervised project and thesis streams are eligible. Applications are submitted at any time for the Accelerate program, but ideally, they should be submitted 2 to 3 months before the start of the project.
