Before registering: tips and practical information

Select your courses in advance

  • Don’t wait until registration opens to learn about the available courses and schedules.
  • Course lists are available in early May and the schedules are published 15 days before registration opens.
  • We recommend saving your course selection in the HEC en ligne course cart before registration opens. You can then find your selections easily. Learn about the course cart.
  • Certain exchange students must have their course selection approved. Ask your home institution for information. HEC Montréal is not able to do this for you.
  • Certain courses have prerequisites. Such requirements are indicated in the course list provided by HEC Montréal. You are responsible for knowing if you meet these requirements.

Consider the workload for each of these courses

  • Reminder. Exchange students must register for at least 4 courses (12 credits that can include a 3-credit language course). They can register for a maximum of 5 business courses (15 credits) plus 1 language course (3 credits).
  • Each course at HEC Montréal is worth 3 credits (equivalent to 6  ECTS).
  • Local students usually take 15 credits (equivalent to 30 ECTS) per term.
  • Students must register for at least 12 credits to be considered full time.
  • A 3-credit course involves 45 hours of class time and 90 hours of additional work, for a total of 135 hours.

ImportantOnly a language course can be added as a 6th course.

See the course syllabus

A course syllabus is a document presenting the course content along with a good deal of additional information, such as the plan for each class session, the teacher’s contact information, and the terms of evaluation.

Course syllabi are available on ZoneCours. It is strongly recommended to view the syllabi for the courses you wish to register for. You can also view the course syllabi for prerequisite courses, as needed.

Find the course syllabi you are looking for:

  1. Go to the “Course outline archive” tab in the lateral menu on the left.
  2. Enter the course number or title in the appropriate fields.
  3. Click “Recherche” and a list will appear.
  4. Select the course you are looking for.

See if there are any course prerequisites

Make sure you meet any requirements before registering for a course.

  1. Go to the Course Portal
  2. Enter the course number or title in the search bar “Search by keywords”.
Add the letter A after the course number for courses taught in English or the letter E after the course number for courses taught in Spanish.
  3. Click the course of interest.
  4. The requirements or prerequisites are listed under “Important notes”, under the course description and themes covered.
  5. If there is no note under “Important notes”, there is no prerequisite.
