Adapt your CV and LinkedIn Profile

Employers are looking for candidates who can demonstrate their professionalism and who are able to highlight their skills and the relevance of these skills. You have to present employers with convincing documents.

Visit our section CV and Letters and the page Create your LinkedIn Profile. You will find the advice you need to adapt your applications for the positions that interest you.

Start early

Most offers for internships, projects and jobs in the summer are posted from January to March, with a maximum in January. But, be careful!

  • Some employers begin their recruitment right at the start of the fall season – this is the case for business, consulting and accounting.
  • Many of them take part in recruitment activities which take place throughout the year at HEC Montréal or off campus.

Offers for internships and projects in the fall and winter are usually posted three to four months prior to the commencement date.

Use different strategies

Sending three or four applications is insufficient to get you an interview. Moreover, meeting with an employer does not guarantee that your application will be selected. You therefore need to send a certain number of CVs and use various strategies to get yourself noticed.

Notify Your Entourage

Employers tend to hire people they know or who were recommended to them. Put your close friends and family, as well as your acquaintances, to work for you. Ask them to activate their networks.

  • Family and friends
  • Colleagues from work, volunteer work, hobbies, studies or training
  • Any other person you know: your dentist, accountant, neighbors, for example

Consult the opportunities.

Contact Employers Directly

There are surely companies or activity sectors which interest you more than others.

  • Do research and draw up lists of organizations.
  • Visit their web pages to see if they offer summer jobs or internships.
  • Take part in pre-recruitment meetings planned by these organizations.
  • Otherwise, send out some spontaneous applications.

Use your phone. Contact the department for which you would like to work. Ask if they have openings for students. Offer your services and send them your adapted CV.

Use LinkedIn to find HEC Montréal alumni and managers working for companies of interest to you. Contact them to find out if their organization has any openings for students. Visit the page How to Use LinkedIn Effectively to successfully complete this task.
